Allergies and Immunotherapy

Itching and scratching due to allergies against dust mites, grasses and tree and weed pollens diminishes your pets quality of life. Allergies are usually a lifelong problem but the good news is that 75% of pets suffering from allergic dermatitis due to these  allergens respond well to Immunotherapy or hyposensitization. Weekly injections of minute quantities which can be accomplished at home under the guidance of a veterinarian help reduce the severity of the allergic itching and rashes.

Injectable and oral formulations have been developed for the most common causes of environmental allergens for South Africa.

Genetic Testing

As part of a preventative approach to petcare, we offer genetic mutation testing for inheritable anomalies as well as colour inheritance and parentage verification. For example: Progressive Retinal Atrophy (blindness) in Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, Miniature Dachshunds and Irish Setters. Another is drug or anaesthetic sensitivity in German Shepherds and Collies.

Other conditions such as Inheritable Cataracts in Stafforshire Terriers, Von Willebrand's Disease (bleeding abnormality) in Dobermans and Scottish Terriers. An inherited bleeding abnormality that might be underlying, could be detrimental in a routine surgery such as a sterilization.

Preventative medicine is having the knowledge of underlying conditions that could put your pet at a disadvantage. Genetic screening can detect some of these abnormalities in the DNA that are inherited.
